If you search for “lutron system cost” you’ll quickly hit a wall.

You know that Lutron is the gold standard for lighting control. But when you look for prices, you can’t find any guidance on what it costs.

The lack of information makes you hesitate to get a quote or – even worse – have no clue if your quote is “good value” or not.

In this guide, I’m going to show you:

  • A price breakdown of two Lutron system costs in the UK, based on real projects quoted in 2026
  • Differences between Lutron RA 3 and Lutron QSX Homeworks
  • The #1 feature factor that determines how much your Lutron system may cost

Want an accurate Lutron System Cost Estimate?

This is a long post.

I’ll reveal the price breakdown from two Lutron system quotes I provided to clients in 2026. But it’s a good 10-15 minute read.

Why Can’t You Find Lutron Cost Guides Online?

There are no Lutron price guides online. Not even for the hardware.

That’s frustrating. I know.

It makes it impossible to know if a quote is reasonable or not. You might be staring at a five or six-figure number, wondering if you’re being sold a dream or a pup.

But there is a reason for all this…

Lutron systems are complex and designed for installations by specialists. You won’t find Lutron at B&Q. That’s why Lutron has a Find a Professional portal in the UK to help you find a trained and vetted installer.

DID YOU KNOW?

My company, Clearly Automated, is one of only 11 Diamond Dealers in the UK. It’s the highest possible tier. And this makes us one of just a handful of serious Lutron specialists.

You wouldn’t price a home extension by the cost of the bricks and mortar. You expect to pay for the architect’s vision, the builder’s craft, and the project management to tie it all together.

A Lutron system is the same.

Wouldn’t a Feature-by-Feature Price Guide Be Great Though?

With that out of the way… wouldn’t it be great to see a feature-by-feature price guide?

I agree. So long as we understand that system costs vary widely by the Lutron infrastructure, setup and installer project management fees.

That’s why I’ve pulled up two real quotes I created in 2026 that cover the most popular Lutron systems:

  • Lutron RA 3
  • Lutron Homeworks QSX

These two systems serve very different purposes. They fall into different price brackets. But that’s why this comparison is so valuable: it will help you understand Lutron system costs and why there’s such a wide range between systems.

Lutron System Costs Comparison: Homeworks QSX vs RA 3

1: Third-Party Integration

Third-party integration is the biggest difference between a Lutron Homeworks QSX system and the RA 3 system. It’s why the price tags sit in different universes.

Our sample quote for the Lutron RA 3 lighting system cost around £4,000 (ex-VAT). Meanwhile our sample quote for a full-home Lutron QSX installation reached over £50,000 (ex-VAT).

Let’s explore the main reason why.

Lutron RA 3: Just Lighting & Blinds

The Lutron RA 3 system is a high-end product that works seamlessly with Lutron keypads and Lutron roller blinds.

But the RA 3 cannot integrate with third-party systems.

This means no integration with:

  • Gates
  • Intercoms
  • CCTV
  • Non-Lutron blinds (e.g. Somfy or Silent Gliss)
  • Speakers
  • Home cinema setups
  • Thermostats
  • Climate control
  • Etc.

If all you want is Lutron lighting or blinds control, RA 3 is great. Our sample quote was for an extension where the client didn’t need integration.

Lutron Homeworks QSX: Third-Party Integration

The QSX is a serious processor and the “brain” of the entire house. Lutron Homeworks QSX is designed to fully integrate with a range of third-party luxury technologies.

We recommended QSX to our client in this sample quote because of they wanted the following integrations:

  • Flawless Dimming
Sophisticated light fittings with different dimming protocols (e.g. DALI) run from a single, unified brain.
  • Whole-Home Scenes
The ability to press one button on a keypad to set scenes and automations. For example, a ‘Goodnight’ scene that turns off the lights, locks the gates, stops a fountain, arms the perimeter sensors, and turns off all the AV equipment.
  • Window Treatments
Control of third-party blinds or curtain tracks in one home automation system.
  • Third-party Automation
Orchestrate multi-step automations across different third-party technologies. For example: if the driveway gate opens, send a signal to the QSX processor and trigger the driveway lights to come on.

Homeworks QSX adds complexity and that means extra programming costs.

Programming & setup costs in sample Lutron Homeworks QSX system quote: £4,000

2: Wired vs. Wireless Hardware Costs

The second major variable: is it wireless or wired?

This choice impacts the type of Lutron system you can install, and the overall cost.

Lutron RA 3: Wireless/Hybrid

The Lutron RA 3 lighting system operates on a wireless (or hybrid) architecture. It needs a centralised processor, but this can be tucked away discreetly in the ceiling void.

For this reason, Lutron RA 3 is great when renovating or building an extension.

You don’t need a dedicated plant room or utility room for distribution panels. And most importantly, you generally won’t need to run new cabling.

The main hardware components in a wireless/hybrid Lutron RA 3 system are:

  • 1x RA3 Dual Radio Processor (£434 per unit)
The “brain” that communicates wirelessly with all dimmers and keypads.
  • Enclosures and Cabling (variable costs)
No centralised panels or specific architectural wiring were required in our sample quote. But these could become necessary, depending on the installation at hand.

Wireless hardware costs for sample RA 3 system: £434

Lutron Homeworks QSX: Wired Infrastructure

The Lutron Homeworks QSX system runs on a wired backbone.

Wired infrastructure allows the Lutron system to handle a massive volume of circuits and complex programming with zero interference.

Because this is a centralised system, all the “brains” and dimming modules must be housed in metal panels – typically in a dedicated plant room or utility area. This requires a higher investment in infrastructure hardware. But if you’re planning a Lutron installation for a new-build or large-scale renovation, there is no system better.

The main hardware components for the Homeworks QXS wired infrastructure are:

  • 1x Homeworks QSX Processor (£1,294 per unit)
The high-performance “brain” of the entire home.
  • 2x DIN Rail Panels with RCBOs (£2,534.50 per unit)
These RCODIN panels are the physical metal enclosures mounted in your plant room to house the system hardware.
  • Wire Harnesses (£224.50 per unit)
The internal wiring looms that connect the dimming modules inside the panels.
  • Panel Door Kits (£536.75 per unit)
The finished covers for the panels to ensure a neat, professional installation.
  • Lutron-specific Cabling (variable costs)
In our sample quote, we needed a mix of specialised LSZH QS Cable, 4-core control cable, and multicore cables to link the keypads and processors. The total cost was £1,850. Your costs may vary.

Architecture hardware cost for sample Homeworks QSX system: £9,707.50

3: Control & Load Hardware Costs

Once the “brain” (i.e. the Lutron processor) is in place, the next cost variable is the hardware that actually does the work.

This refers to the dimmers that control the power and the keypads to interact with the system.

We’ll start with RA 3.

Lutron RA 3: Functional Hardware

RA 3 is designed for simplicity. Because it’s a “one-for-one” system, the hardware cost scales directly with the number of lights you want to control.

The main functional hardware components in a Lutron RA 3 system are:

  • RA3 In-Line Dimmer (£147 per unit)
These are the workhorses of the system. We use one per lighting circuit. They are compact enough to be tucked into ceiling voids, providing local control for every room.
  • Pico Controller (£80 – £130 per unit)
These act as your wall switches. They are incredibly flexible – you can mount them on a wall, leave them on a pedestal, or even stick them to glass.

Total cost for functional hardware in sample RA 3 quote: £3,505

Lutron Homeworks QSX: Functional Hardware

Homeworks hardware is more industrial.

Instead of individual dimmers hidden in the ceiling, we use high-capacity modules housed in your central panels.

You’ll also move into the world of luxury, designer “user interfaces” (keypads). These are used to control your Lutron system and replace plastic switches throughout your home.

The functional hardware for our sample Homeworks QSX system quote included:

  • DIN Rail Power Modules (£565 – £685 per unit)
These are centralised “multi-channel” units. One module can control up to 4 different lighting circuits.
  • DALI Interface (£976 per unit)
For high-end architectural lighting (DALI), this specialised interface is required to provide the digital precision that standard dimmers can’t reach.
  • Keypads (£150-600+ per unit)
The most popular choices for Homeworks QSX are the sleek, minimalist Palladiom, the artisanal Alisse, or bespoke custom-made keypads tailored to your interior.
  • Bulk Infrastructure Equipment (Cost Varies)
This covers landing boards and internal power supplies used to terminate all the house wiring within the central panels.

Total cost for functional hardware in sample Homeworks QSX quote: £15,985

4: Lighting Circuits

To keep it simple: the more rooms and keypads you have, the more circuits you need.

Each circuit represents a “group” of lights you want to control independently. Your circuit count dictates how much hardware we need and – therefore – the overall cost.

I hear clients question the number of modules and panels in a quote. They ask:

“Can’t I just put all the lights on one circuit?”

You can. But you wouldn’t want to.

Here’s the reason why.

Imagine all the lights in a bedroom are wired to a single circuit: bedside lights, downlights, pendant, picture lights, etc.

Turning up a bedside lamp to 100% causes every light in the room to ramp up to 100%.

To allow independent control…you need multiple circuits. Sometimes you need 10-15 circuits in an open-plan area – which means more modules and more control panels.

Lutron RA 3: Circuits and Hardware Volume

With Lutron RA 3, calculating hardware is straightforward.

For smaller setups, Lutron RA 3 is a “one-for-one” system where each individual lighting circuit gets its own compact dimmer.

For example, our sample quote included 15 RA3 In-Line Dimmers (£147 each) to cover 15 lighting circuits. It’s a direct, circuit-by-circuit setup that’s easy to track. (Note: For slightly larger areas, we can also use 4-circuit modules to manage multiple groups of lights from a single, organised unit.)

This smaller scale requires only one RA3 Dual Radio Processor (£434) and eliminates the need for bulky metal cabinets or a dedicated utility room to house the system.

The £3,505 cost for functional hardware in our sample Lutron RA 3 example is a reflection of the 15 lighting circuits and 10 Pico controllers.

Lutron Homeworks QSX: Circuits and Hardware

The QSX system is engineered for high circuit volume, which means more hardware and more costs.

In our QSX sample quote, a total of 27 dimming and switching modules were required. It’s a big property.  This high volume of hardware means we need large multiple panels – 12 panels in total – to house all the modules, power supplies, and wiring.

The four UNIVERSAL ES DALI Interface units are a consequence of the complexity. Simpler phase-dimming hardware would not work here.

If you’re not bothered by control and integration, the QSX Homeworks might not be for you.

But you need it for your Lutron system to be able to:

  • Manage complex light scenes in a single zone.
  • Execute complex, single-button “scenes.”
  • Automate ‘Goodnight’ to secure the entire home.
  • Achieve deep integration with third-party systems.
  • Integration with security, gates, and climate control.
  • Connections with irrigation, fountains and water systems.
  • Flawless, layered lighting control in every room.
  • Offer independent control over all light fittings.
  • Have precise control of sophisticated DALI light fixtures.

The £36,220 cost for functional hardware in our sample Lutron Homeworks QSX quote is a reflection of over 100 circuits to the centralised modules and panels, plus 23 Alisse keypads.

5: Project Management, Handover, and Training

We’ve already accounted for the technical programming and setup.

But Project Management (PM) is the human element. It’s the specialist oversight required to coordinate with your electricians, site managers, and interior designers to ensure every keypad is straight and every light scene is as you imagined.

Lutron RA 3: Streamlined Oversight

Because RA 3 is often a retrofit or an extension-based project, the project management requirements are usually minimal.

PM fees for RA 3 may only appear if there is significant new wiring involved or if the project needs to be phased over several months. For a standard installation, though, this is often included in the setup.

  • Project Management & Coordination
    Typically minimal for wireless setups
  • Handover & Training:
Usually a 1-hour walk-through to show you how to use the Lutron App

Project management & handover cost in sample RA 3 quote: £0.00

Lutron Homeworks QSX: Expert Coordination

Homeworks QSX is almost always installed during a new build or a “back-to-brick” renovation.

This means your Lutron installer is a key contractor on-site. They must communicate with the electrical contractor, the building contractor and/or the site manager.

The handover also needs a dedicated session to ensure you are 100% comfortable with your new smart home. This includes not just the Lutron app and keypads, but using your new multi-room audio, high-spec home cinemas, HVAC, and s on.

  • Project Management Range
Typically £1,000 to £8,000+ depending on the scale of the build and the level of integration (AV, Cinema, etc.).
  • Handover & Training
A comprehensive session to personalise your scenes and ensure the system is tailored to your lifestyle.

Project management & handover cost in sample Homeworks QSX quote: £3,000

So…What Would a Lutron System Actually Cost Me?

If you remember one thing, let it be this:

A Lutron system is not about controlling lights. It’s about how your home feels to live in.

A Lutron lighting system becomes an integral part of day-to-day life. It’s not something you can DIY. And that requires working with quotes that vary from installer to installer.

So how much will your Lutron system cost?

The honest answer is:

  • Lutron RA 3 system: £3,000 – £20,000+
  • Lutron HomeWorks QSX system: £20,000 – £300,000+

Where your Lutron quote will fall depends on:

  • Property size
  • Level of control required
  • Number of circuits (and consequently modules, panels and processors)
  • Integration with other home automation technologies
  • Finishes (keypads, fittings)
